Many adults wonder how much alcohol is too much? How much is a “safe” amount to drink?
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a part of the National Institutes of Health, offers these recommendations:
• Women should consume no more than three drinks per day and no more than a total of seven drinks per week.
• Men should consume no more than four drinks per day and no more than a total of 14 drinks per week.
A drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or a 1.5 fluid-ounce shot of 80-proof distilled spirits.
Adults who exceed these recommendations may be at risk for alcohol use disorder, a term which is now used to describe a dependence or excessive use of alcohol. Alcohol use disorder may be characterized as mild, moderate or severe.
