Carolina Parent’s 2016 Fit Family Challenge is revving up for a May 1 kick-off, and we’re bringing back the online fitness tracker, weekly “Healthy Families” e-newsletters, Fit Family blog posts and amazing prizes.

You’ll meet the Lucas and Prater families, who will work with a panel of wellness experts and shine in our Fit Family spotlight, sharing their challenges and triumphs with all of you during this eight-week challenge.

You can also attend free fitness classes and events to earn bonus points.

Registration is open so sign up today at myfitfamilychallenge.com! But first, here are answers to frequently asked questions about how the challenge will work.

What is the Fit Family Challenge?

The Fit Family Challenge is a free, eight-week healthy lifestyle program for Triangle families. We want to motivate families to get moving and create healthier lifestyles. Read all about it at carolinaparent.com/cp/fit-family-challenge-faq.

Who can participate?

The Fit Family Challenge is designed to focus on helping families create a healthier lifestyle. Participants under 18 years old must be included in a family registration account that has at least one adult participant. Families can also be nontraditional, as long as they do not exceed four members older than 18. So groups can create their own Fit Family Challenge account and participate.

How does my family participate?

Visit myfitfamilychallenge.com and click on “Get Started!” Starting May 1, you can sign into your account to track activities for a chance to earn points and win prizes. The more you participate, the more points you earn! The online tracker keeps a running balance of the minutes of activity for each participant, which is updated in real time on a statewide digital scoreboard. It's also mobile-friendly, so you can log activities and minutes using your smartphone, too. You can also receive text reminders to log your minutes by texting "Fit Family Challenge" to 313131.

As a Fit Family Challenge participant, you’ll have access to free community exercise classes, expert fitness advice and nutrition tips. You can earn extra points by attending Fit Family Challenge events and fitness classes. Here's how points accummulate:

POINTS (per family member):

1) Log 150 minutes per week of activity = Earn 100 points (earn up to 200 points per week)

2) Log daily healthy habits = Earn 10 points per habit; select up to five healthy habits daily to earn more points.

3) Bonus points: Attend select events or classes* =  Earn 100 points per class; enter promo code provided at event/class.

Families are considered one unit and family points are combined. (i.e. the Jones family earns 300 points = 3 chances to win the prize drawing.) However, points are earned individually for minutes of activity and healthy habits. So, Mom or Dad, you can't benefit from Junior's active lifestyle. You gotta get active, too! So work together to build up points and get healthy!

What can we win?

The grand prize for the 2016 Fit Family Challenge is a family vacation to Universal Orlando® Resort! There will also be weekly prizes and a benchmark prize of tickets to Busch Gardens that will be awarded during week four. Winners are determined by random drawings, so everyone has a chance.

Who are the 2016 spotlight families?

The Lucas Family of Wendell

Kelvin (dad)
Felicia (mom)
Isaiah (16)
Kelsey (13)
Silas (8)

“We want to do this challenge so our family can get the proper resources to become healthier, to not only impact our family, but for generations that will come behind us.”

— Felicia Lucas

The Lucas Family

The Prater Family of Chapel Hill

Jennifer (mom)
Matthew (11)
Allyson (9)

“As a single mom, it has been heartbreaking to watch my kids gain weight. … I don’t think there have been enough realistic examples out here in the media to show the struggles of typical overweight families. I will take the challenge seriously and can’t wait to show off the results this summer!”

— Jennifer Quesenberry Prater

The Prater Family

Who is on the panel of experts?

Our 2015 panel returns — and gains a member — to guide the Lucas and Prater families during their journey toward wellness.

Evie Houtz, Program Specialist for Be Active Kids, previously worked as a personal trainer and Health Enhancement Director for the Chapel Hill-Carborro YMCA and now, at Be Active Kids, focuses on coordinating statewide campaigns to increases active play and physical activity for kids

Gaye Esser, Life Coach and owner of Redefine Balance, is a certified graduate of Coach U and a Level II Reiki practitioner. She works with amazing women to find their bliss and own their happiness from the inside out.

Tracy Owens and Ashley Acornley of Triangle Nutrition Therapy, will create customized nutrition solutions for our spotlight families. Owens is a board-certified sports and clinical dietician, as well as a registered dietitian and board-certified specialist in sports dietetics. Ashley Acornley is a registered dietician and certified personal trainer.

Ashley Acornley, also of Triangle Nutrition Therapy, is a clinical and sports dietitian and certified personal trainer who will assist Tracy with providing nutrition plans and solutions for the Fit Family Challenge spotlight families and participants.

Why Join the Fit Family Challenge?

Parents today are challenged with health and wellness issues facing their families. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17 percent of America's kids were obese between 2011 and 2014. Help us make a positive impact on this statistic.

2015 Fit Family Challenge Recap

Last year, we had 5.8 million minutes of activity logged, 246,000 healthy habits recorded and 15,4000 people impacted. Approximately 62 percent of survey respondents said their families ate healthier as a result of the Fit Family Challenge.

Stay tuned for more information as we get ready to kick off this exciting program May 1!
