Garner Storytelling Festival Offers Children Fun
Spend a Saturday afternoon with your family listening to professional and student storytellers from 11 Garner area schools at the ninth annual Garner Storytelling Festival Saturday, March 10, 1-3:30 p.m., at North Garner Middle School. This free event will spark the imagination and entertains children of all ages.
This year's professional storytellers include Timmy and Susana Abell, a couple who performs at schools, libraries and showcases up and down the East Coast. The Abells combine their storytelling talents with music and puppetry to entertain the eyes, ears and heart.
A professional storyteller will tell a story, then introduce student storytellers from local schools. Some of these schools have storytelling clubs that allow students to practice before performing for a public audience. Many middle and high school students participate in poetry jams instead of storytelling presentations, offering alternative entertainment to the festival.
"I have been involved with the storytelling festival since the beginning," says Sherri Bunn Godwin, an information skills specialist at Smith Magnet Elementary in Garner. "It is an awesome experience. The student storytellers are awesome and the overall atmosphere is amazing."
A morning workshop for teachers and educators will take place from 8-11:30 a.m. before the afternoon storytelling festival. Between the morning and afternoon sessions, artwork from students in Garner area schools will be showcased in a PowerPoint presentation. At 12:30 p.m., chorus groups from several of the schools will perform, rounding out the artistic afternoon.
The Garner Storytelling Festival is hosted by media specialists from participating schools, with support from the Southeast Regional branch of Wake County public libraries and the Garner Educational Foundation. North Garner Middle School is at 720 Powell Dr., Garner. For more information visit www.garnernc.gov/GEF/storytellingfestival.htm or call the Southeast Regional Library at 919-662-2250.
