Have fun this weekend making play dough at the Southwest Regional Library in Durham, getting inspired to make your own fashion creations at the North Carolina Museum of Art, learning how to turn your back yard into a haven for winter wildlife at Blue Jay Point County Park in Raleigh, finding out how to upcycle items at the ReStore in Durham, and watching a fun play and musical at the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Apex.

Play-Doh Lab FREE

Does your child like to squish, knead and create new things out of Play-Doh? Join the staff at the Southwest Regional Library in Durham on Dec. 8 from 4-5 p.m. in a Play-Doh Lab and make sure to bring your imagination. Participants will also be able to create gluten-free dough to take home. This activity is FREE and requires no registration.

Family Fun Saturdays: Ready to Wear

Cut, shape and build an artwork fit for the runway at this workshop at the North Carolina Museum of Art on Dec. 9, 10 a.m.-noon. Participants will take inspiration from the clothes and accessories on view in the exhibit “Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair” to create their own wearable art to take home. This two-hour program is geared toward kids ages 5-11 and includes a guided tour through the exhibit. Preregistration is required, and each participant – parent and child – must have a ticket. Museum members pay $5 and nonmembers pay $8.

Family Wildlife Series: Holiday Habitat Helpers

You can turn your own backyard into a haven for winter wildlife by making just a few changes. On Dec. 9, 2-3 p.m., check out Blue Jay Point County Park’s Garden Area for some ideas and create some simple habitat helpers you can add to your own yard. Preregistration is required and each family member participating must have a ticket. This program is most appropriate for ages 5 and up, and tickets are $1 each.

Upcycled Workshop: Cabinet Door to Chalkboard and More

Learn how to repurpose and upcycle an old cabinet door into a chalkboard or other decorative item at this workshop at Habitat ReStore of Durham & Orange Counties. The program requires a $10 reservation fee at registration. Upon completion of the activity, participants receive a $15 ReStore gift card. The workshop is kid-friendly and runs 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Dec. 9.

Christmas Play and Musical

On Dec. 10 at 3 p.m., enjoy performances of “A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol” and “The Great Big Holiday Bake Off, A Confectionary Christmas Musical” at the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Apex. The play presents a “fractured fairy tale” version of an old favorite and the musical chronicles a cooking competition. Tickets are $10 for ages 17 and older, and $6 for students 16 and under. They may be purchased online here or at the box office or by calling 919-249-1120.
