Take to the streets to watch the Hillsborough Handmade Parade bring wild creatures to life. Head to festivals that celebrate Indian culture or offer an opportunity to party with Fido. Attend harvest and Halloween events or visit parks for nature programs. Fun flows freely this weekend in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Hillsborough Handmade Parade
Head to a Mardi Gras style street parade created by the local community featuring handmade costumes, giant puppets, stilt-walkers and marching bands Saturday, Oct. 15. The parade is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 101 East Orange Street, and end at Cameron Park in Hillsborough. The theme is "Walk of the Wild Things."

The Cary Diwali Festival
Celebrate Indian culture with music, dance, yoga, food, traditional arts and a handicrafts bazaar at Koka Booth Amphitheatre 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Fireworks cap off the festival. Admission is free and parking is $5.

Barktoberfest
Take Fido to a canine-lovers festival, noon-4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 16, at Rock Quarry Park in Durham. Enjoy a family-oriented show featuring rescued and adopted dogs, a canine disc competition, a fun zone, and a costume contest and parade where you get to dress up your pup.

North Carolina State Fair
Enjoy rides and games, a "Flower and Garden Show," "Folk Festival," the Village of Yesteryear, featuring more than 75 artists and crafters, and the "Field of Dreams," a miniature farm designed to help children learn how food is grown. The fair is Oct. 13-23. Visit the fair website for hours of operation.

Cary’s Fire Prevention Week Celebration

Trick-or-Treat Events
Catch some early Halloween fun, like Fright Night 6-9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at Forest Hills Park in Durham, when you can don a costume and enjoy a costume contest, carnival games and a haunted house. (Admission is a canned food donation for the Durham Rescue Mission.) Learn more in our roundup of Halloween fun.

Nature Programs at Local Parks
Take your kids to area parks for walks and naturalist programs that cultivate their curiosity about Mother Nature. Browse our Daily Calendar for details.

Duke Homestead Archaeology Dig
Take your kids for free history-themed activities 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Oct. 15, at Duke Homestead in Durham. You’ll help Duke Homestead staff dig for clues about life for a North Carolina farm family in the 19th century.

Raleigh Little Theatre's Costume Sale
Get your Halloween costume at this sale 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, where you’ll vintage hats, fun costumes, accessories and more. Concessions will be on sale. Credit and debit cards are accepted.

Heading out to eat or shop on Saturday, Oct. 15?

Where you dine or shop can help victims of Hurricane Matthew. A growing number of Raleigh and Durham restaurants, bars, and retailers will contribute proceeds from specific items or as much as 30 percent of tomorrow's receipts to the North Carolina Community Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund as part of Rally + Relief NC's effort to raise funds for #HurricaneMatthew flood victims across North Carolina.
