Fit Family Challenge Lucas Family Gets Moving

The Lucas family is off to a good start on the Fit Family Challenge. We have met with our experts and come up with a simple plan to tackle our fitness and healthy eating goals. Our family has decided to be active two to three days a week for at least 30 minutes. The rule is that all five have to participate in for it to count as a family activity. We have been able to do two activities each week thus far.
We wanted to try a new activity, so tennis was our choice. We went down to our local park and practiced hitting the ball back and forth. We then decided to play a couple of sets and, boy, did we have some fun and a few laughs. Tennis will be an activity that we will do again.

The Lucas kids wanted to do some activities using their X-box Kinect. We did challenges of boys versys girls, and guess what? Girls rock! We did table tennis, track and field, bowling and a few more fun activities. Dad Kelvin had four strikes in a row. He ended up as the bowling champion.
Mom Felicia has been busy walking 30 minutes a day three to four days a week. I participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life! I had a great time walking the laps!
During this challenge time, Kelsey celebrated her 14th birthday. We decided to get a single-layer chocolate cake. One day of celebrating does not hinder a healthy lifestyle. Anything done in moderation is the key to long-term success!
We also decided to focus on healthy eating of snacks. When we went grocery shopping, we picked up more fruits and snacks that were not cookies, potato chips and candy. This is a major adjustment for the kids. On a a few occasions, some unhealthy snacks have entered our home from school or friends. My ultimate desire is that my kids choose healthy food as much as possible, even when I'm not with them.
For the next weeks, we will still focus on our family snacking and activities, as Dad Kelvin and Mom Felicia tackle yoga for the first time. Stay tuned!
