Family Academy is a family engagement initiative of Durham Public Schools designed to help parents and families become full partners in their students’ education. Classes and events focus on what students are learning in schools, positive behavior, the individual education program process, test preparation, helping with homework, advocacy, parent leadership and more. The school system is basing this plan on research that shows when there is a high level of parent engagement, children have fewer discipline problems, as well as higher grades, test scores, graduation rates and student attendance.
Family Academy also connects with community partners to develop a variety of topics related to family health and wellness, child development, homework support, and social and emotional learning. Examples of classes include Promoting Literacy at Home and Test Preparation for Parents and Students. Explore the resources available in the Signature Classes and Resources Catalog and Parent Resource Guide, both available at dpsnc.net/page/196.
