Duke Homestead Summer Children's Festival
Duke Homestead in Durham celebrates the young and young-at-heart at its Summer Children's Festival Aug. 11, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The fun-filled event includes kid-friendly crafts, mule-drawn wagon rides, face painting, a bubble pool, an archaeological dig for special prizes and a beanbag toss.
In the historic area, costumed interpreters demonstrate 19th-century games, rag doll making and rolling hoop races. Children can learn how to make butter and bake cookies in the homestead's kitchen. Other special treats include tractor-churned ice cream and musicians playing traditional fiddle and banjo music. Admission is free.
