Dorothea Dix Park Daffodil Field Pops Up to Welcome Spring

A trail of flowers winds through the field with Raleigh's skyline providing a backdrop

Remember Dorothea Dix Park's popular sunflower field that residents of the Triangle flocked to for family portraits and selfies this summer? Now you can experience a field of a different sort, just in time for spring. Follow a trail of daffodils that wind through the park to see more bursts of yellow, with a view of the Raleigh skyline providing a dramatic backdrop for your photos.

The park's horticulture team worked with Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources to plant a hidden swath of spring bulbs that would pop up in the middle of the field and wind towards the Raleigh skyline. The daffodils are planted in Flowers Field off Umstead Drive behind the Flower Cottage and near the historic cemetery. Use this address to locate the field:

Flowers Field at Dix Park
2105 Umstead Dr.
Raleigh, North Carolina 27603

Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources made it happen back in November by using a special bulb-planting machine designed in Holland to plant 50,000 bulbs in just minutes and leaves the field undisturbed. An online article published March 5 by the park about the daffodil field describes how the machine works:

"As the bulb-planting machine is pulled behind a tractor, two blades slice open and lift-up the turf. The bulbs move down through a funnel into the open row in the ground. As the machine rolls forward, the grass is closed back over the newly laid bulbs." View a video of this process here:

Now is the perfect time to visit the field. If you go, follow these guidelines, provided by the park:

  • Please do not pick the flowers.
  • Public parking is available in gravel lots along Barbour Drive, at the soccer fields and at the Greenway. During business hours, please avoid parking in lots associated with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. More than 2,000 employees work on the campus each week day. On weeknights and weekends, designated parking lots with green striping are available for public use.
  • Pets are welcome but must be on a leash. Please pick up after them.
  • Porta-johns are available for visitors, but there is no drinking water so plan accordingly.
  • There are only porta-johns in the park and no drinkable water, so please plan accordingly and enjoy the beautiful blooms!
