Having deep-fried dreams of Jello, Cuban rolls and strawberry cream puffs? They can all come true at the 2016 North Carolina State Fair, which takes place Oct. 13-23 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.
Fair vendors are serving up a range of deep-fried delicacies, but "nothing could be finer" than also trying Bubba Bacon's brand-new "Man's Sandwich," a grilled cheese sandwich wrapped in ... bacon, of course!
La Farm Bakery's "Whoopie Pies" are sure to be a big hit, and Gobblin' Gourmet will offer the "Violet Vampire" this year — a blueberry-infused funnel cake topped with powdered sugar. Save room for North Carolina State University's very own Howling Cow Apple Crisp ice cream! Hungry yet? View a full list of new fair foods here.
Four new rides are operating at this year's fair. In addition to the State Fair Flyer, which soars across the midway, fair attendees can try the Powers Parthenon Wheel, Street Fighter 360 and Sea Ray.
Free entertainment (with admission) includes The Cutest Show on Earth, The Magic Bean, Casey's Clubhouse and Casey's Big Slide in Kiddleland; the Circle "C" Racing Pigs near gate 10, Chinese Imperial Acrobats between gates 9 and 10, Pirates of the Columbian Caribbean near gate 11 and much more.
Grandstand shows include the Tractor Pull ($10), King Action Sports Stunt Show (free) and the Demo Derby ($10).
If it's live music you're looking for, the Homegrown Music Fest features 117 concerts on three stages. See performances by The Embers (featuring Craig Woolard), The Soul Psychedelique Orchestra, Chris Lane of Kernersville, Superchunk with singer/songwriter Skylar Gudasz of Chapel Hill and more.
Purchase tickets for $10 at the gate or $9 online for ages 13-64; $6 at the gate or online for military guests ages 13-64; $5 at the gate and $4 online for ages 6-12; and free for ages 5 and younger and 65 and older.
Last year's state fair attendance numbers peaked at 1,019,732, so expect a crowd and traffic near parking areas. You can also download the free "State Fair App" by searching for "State Fair" in the iTunes store or Android Marketplace.
