Day 32 — One Simple Wish
Today, I donated a wish

The news is full of outrage at the separation of young children from their families at our borders. I share that outrage. I can’t imagine the sheer terror of not knowing where your child is. Are they safe? Are they being well taken care of? What do they understand about what is going on? When will you see them again?
It’s even more overwhelming to imagine it from the child’s perspective. You’re in a new country where you probably don’t speak the language. You’re taken from your parents and forced to live with other children, who are also separated and scared and feeling alone. You can’t advocate for yourself. You don’t understand what is going on. All you know if you’re scared and alone and want your parents.
Sometimes it is too hard for me to even think about. I did an act of kindness earlier in the project to help these children. If you’ve followed the Together Rising website you have seen the remarkable amount of support they have generated for these children. I feel like people are mobilizing to help these families and for that I am thankful. My wish is that every family be reunited as soon as possible.
For today’s act of kindness, I wanted to do something to help the children within the foster care system who have also been separated from their parents. I imagine they have experienced some similar feelings to the children we see on the news. Often, we forget about these kids, but they need our attention too. All children deserve a forever family, and until they find that they deserve to be in safe and loving homes.
I heard about an organization that raises money to help these children fulfill one simple wish — be it a toy, a bike or music lessons. Foster families don’t always have the means to make these wishes come true. That’s where One Simple Wish steps in. This video is worth watching.
Here are some statements from the website:
Every voice heard. Every child loved.
At One Simple Wish we believe that every child deserves love, hope and joy.
Every year nearly 500,000 children are impacted by abuse, neglect and trauma and spend time in our nation’s foster care system. It can be lonely, confusing and a bit scary. Through our innovative wish-granting platform, you can send some love to a child who needs it. When wishes come true, kids not only have a chance to just be kids, but they can also make important connections, experience new things and discover their passion!
Here are some other statistics from the One Simple Wish website:
500,000+ kids spend time in foster care each year.
100,000+ kids are waiting to be adopted.
22,000+ young people age out without stable, permanent connections.
We are here for them all!
Today, I donated a wish.
