Community Health Centers in the Triangle

A county-by-county guide

Community health centers are nonprofit, community-based and patient-directed health organizations. They provide high quality, affordable and comprehensive medical care, often in impoverished areas. Their goal is to improve the general health of their patients. They do this by offering a variety of services under one roof. These
can include:

• Primary medical care, including pediatrics
• Dental care
• Behavioral and mental health care
• Substance abuse counseling
• Pharmacy and medication assistance programs
• Case management
• Health education
• Health insurance enrollment assistance
• Nutrition counseling
• Interpretation
• Transportation
• Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Food and Nutrition programs

Ben Money, the CEO and president of the North Carolina Community Health Care Association, says he believes many people think community health centers are exclusively for low-income families. This is not true, he says. Anyone can receive care at a community health center, even people who have medical insurance.

“Community health care facilities have a focus on high-quality care with board-certified providers,” Money says. “The neat thing is that they are operating in a really holistic way.”

At these centers, primary care providers, pharmacists and counselors are together in the same building so they can collaborate and coordinate care for their patients. If a doctor identifies a new health issue during a visit, services that focus on that issue may also be available.

Community health centers receive federal funding to help subsidize the fees associated with their services. Those fees can be adjusted on a sliding scale based on a patient’s ability to pay. Eligibility for the sliding fee scales are based on income and the number of people in a patient’s household, according to federal poverty guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Many community health centers also have access to other programs that can help patients manage costs. In order to determine qualifications for reduced rates, patients need to contact the specific community health center they are planning to visit.

Unfortunately, this funding is not guaranteed. Community health centers realize greater economic stability by increasing the number of patients who have private insurance, or with patients who are covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Bringing those patients into a community health center is challenging because many people don’t know these facilities exist. Community health centers aren’t all run by the same organization, nor do they share a logo, so people often have a difficult time identifying them.

Here’s a list of community health centers located across the Triangle.
