A new children’s book store, Read With Me, opens in downtown Raleigh Friday, April 7, and will feature storytimes, author talks, writing workshops and more.
Located less than one block from Marbles Kids Museum at 111 E. Hargett Street, Suite 110 (between Briggs Hardware and Arrow Haircuts), the independent book store will offer expertly curated selections of children’s books, from board books all the way up to young adult novels, plus a small selection of parenting books.

The store will also feature local art and gift items such as onesies and book-themed totes.
The store’s founder, Christine Brenner, a former teacher and school librarian, says Read With Me will be a place for everyone to share their love of books.
“We’re all well aware of the importance of literacy for a child’s academic success. Our name, Read With Me, highlights the number one way to encourage your child to value reading: by reading ‘with’ rather than ‘to’ your child,” Brenner said. “Reading should be a shared, engaging experience between adult and child that is an open interaction of sharing thoughts and asking questions.”
The store’s grand opening is slated for 11 a.m., Friday, April 7. Preschool story and craft times are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.,Tuesday, April 11, and Wednesday, April 12. These events are free and open to the public.
Brenner has already planned several events with children’s book authors, including Nicole Bruno Cox, author of “Itchy Pig,” 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 6; and Aaliyah Blackmon, author of “The Silent Ninja” books, 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 20. The bookstore’s Facebook page lists upcoming store events and allows patrons to RSVP when seating is limited.
The store is sure to delight both parents and children, with a custom-built, two-tier story corner and a chalkboard mural created by a local artist. In addition to regular story times, Read With Me will offer writing workshops, book clubs and illustration classes for children and adults. Brenner also plans to participate in downtown Raleigh’s monthly First Friday Gallery Walks.
