Chapel Hill High School Junior Make A Difference
O'Briant is one of the most active participants in the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program's Youth Leadership Institute.
"Before I was in YLI, I didn't really know what community service was," O'Briant says. "It's more than doing something because someone tells you to do it. It's you doing it because you feel it's something you need to do and should do to help out." The leadership program is affiliated with Communities in Schools of North Carolina, the state's division of the nation's leading dropout prevention organization.
Graig Meyer, program coordinator for the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program, says of O'Briant, "She's the type of kid who's very social and personable and she has taken the skills we have taught her and used them to serve others in the community. She's really fantastic."
The Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program has about 80 kids in its leadership program, which hosts service projects several times a month throughout the year to teach the importance of helping others through community service activities.
