Growing up, some of my best memories of outings with my mother were at the fresh air market each week. We would walk among the rows of farmers’ stalls spread outdoors, and as she stopped to examine fruits and vegetables and talk with the vendors, I’d get enticing wafts of fresh produce and meet the people who had sown the food I’d eat.
Farmers markets are a wonderful way to introduce children to new, fresh foods, and the Carrboro Farmers Market is reaching out to kids this summer with a free program designed just for them. The Market Bunch Kids Club offers fun activities and $5 of free market bucks for kids ages 5-14 each market day through the summer while supplies last.
The club features fun and educational weekly activities like vegetable taste tests, scavenger hunts, vegetable trivia and art activities. Each week that kids participate in the club, they earn $5 of Market Bucks to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at market. They can opt to take home their favorite fruit or save up the bucks to spend later in the month. Stop by the Market Bunch table near the welcome booth at the Wednesday or Saturday Market to sign your kids up.
