Carolina Parent Wins Silver for Parenting Media Association's General Excellence Category
Carolina Parent magazine entered four categories and received awards for all four entries from the Parenting Media Association (PMA) during its Annual Editorial and Design Competition, a three-day annual convention held this year in Baltimore, Md., Feb. 27-March 1, 2015.
According to an email sent by the PMA staff March 1, a panel of 19 judges reviewed 630 entries to choose the winners in each category, and "all judges drew upon significant professional experience in selecting the winners." Winners are selected as bronze, silver and gold winners within each circulation category.
Carolina Parent competed in the 25,001-44,999 circulation categeory and brought home the following awards:
Silver Award for General Excellence
Judges' comments: "This publication knows how to write strong 'teases' on its cover, and strong editing continues inside with every feature. A very good mix of features, like Birthday Party ideas by age and craft ideas like tie-dye coffee filters. Overall, a light and bright feel."
Gold Award for Feature Layout
Judges' comments: "Thanks to its dynamic design, this story begs to be read. The dominant photo illustration is visually tied to the key words of the compelling headline. The white space and use of lines tell readers where to start, and the intro, quotes and subheads guide readers through the pages. This design is sophisticated and effective."
Silver Award for Special Series
Judges' comments: "The Family Challenge is a challenge to shape up. The aim is high, the results inspirational. Sound advice is provided by authoritative sources. The writing is clean and clear."
Silver Award for Best E-Newsletter
Judges' comments: "A clean design and intuitive user experience make this newsletter a judges' favorite. Topic headings effectively break up content to make it easy for subscribers to digest quickly on computers or mobile devices alike. Photos are used effectively to break up long blocks, keeping from overwhelming the reader."
PMA's Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design achieved by publishers, editors, writers and designers at member publications. Professor Daryl Moen of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism coordinated the annual contest.
"Many of the larger writing categories were the most competitive" Moen says. "The best across the board were as
good, or better, than most years," he added. "The digital categories, as a group, continue to grow as more publications do more on their websites and with digital newsletters."
Established in March 1988, PMA is a national trade association of regional parenting publications. Headquartered in Los Angeles, PMA is a nonprofit national organization representing more than 100 parenting magazines and newspapers in the United States, Canada and Australia.
"The purpose of the PMA awards competition is to encourage a high level of journalistic performance and service to
communities by recognizing editorial excellence and outstanding visual presentation in parenting publications," says PMA Executive Director C. James Dowden.
