Avoid Bringing Bedbugs Home
The resurgence of bedbug infestations across the country, including in high-end hotels and apartment buildings, is spurring some travelers to take precautions to prevent bringing the pesky critters home. The North Carolina Pest Management Association recommends the following:
- Travel with a plastic trash bag to encase your suitcase for extra protection.
- Store suitcases on a luggage rack instead of on the floor.
- Take a small flashlight and examine the sheets, mattress covers and creases of mattress before sleeping in the room. Bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed. Other signs of infestation include spots of blood or tiny dark spots, which could be eggs on mattresses or sheets.
- Place your suitcase in the bathtub when you return home so you can see any bedbugs more easily and vacuum it out before storing it.
