High school seniors have more time this fall to take advantage of College Foundation of North Carolina's college application event, which has been expanded from a week-long time period to one month. College Application Month began Oct. 30 and runs through Nov. 24.

During this time period, high school seniors are able to get additional help with their college applications through CFNC.org. North Carolina College Application Month will support high school seniors in completing three important college enrollment steps:

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
2. Residency
3. Applications

Schools can register to be a part of College Application Month at CFNC.org/CAM.

College Application Month kicked off with FAFSA Day on Saturday, Oct. 28, during which students were able to get help completing their FAFSA applications. In addition, many students this year will also be using the new Residency Determination Service to determine eligibility for in-state tuition and state grants, which provides a single centralized determination of residency for the student. The residency determination will go hand-in-hand with the college application process, and is an important part of this year’s College Application Month.

Week 1: Starting with FAFSA Day on Oct. 28 and continuing throughout the first week of November, school officials will be promoting College Application Month to graduating seniors.

Week 2: In the second week of November, students should have downloaded their college application checklist from cfnc.org to ensure they have all the necessary information in hand to complete their applications. Students should go to ncresidency.org to request a determination of in-state residency for tuition purposes and state grant eligibility.

Week 3: The third week in November is when participating North Carolina colleges and universities will begin to waive application fees; a number of North Carolina colleges and universities have agreed to accept College Board, ACT and National Association for College Admission Counseling fee waivers, while some have waived the application fee completely. Students can start the application process beginning Nov. 13 and submit their applications anytime throughout that week.

Week 4: The final week of November will be used for application follow ups.

“This year, we are thrilled to be expanding this event from College Application Week to College Application Month,” says Tenika McMillan, College Application Month coordinator. “This college access event can be tremendously beneficial for students — they just need an account on cfnc.org to participate. There will be counselors, support staff and volunteers available throughout the month to aid students during the application process.”
