backThese are quick, basic steps for toning a photo in PHOTOSHOP. These instructions assume you are working with an RGB image (which is what you will get from most digital cameras and scanners).
| CHECK SETTINGS |
Open Photoshop |
Select the Eyedropper tool and make sure the Sample Size is set to 3 by 3 Average" |
In the Color palette click on the triangle and make sure there is a check next to “CMYK Sliders" |
| OPEN IMAGE/CMYK Preview |
Open the image and press Command +Y to turn on the CMYK Preview. You should see “(RGB/CMYK)” in the title bar of the
image. |
| Note: This is actually called “Proof Colors” and is at View Menu>Proof Colors. |
| CROP/CHECK IMAGE SIZE |
Use the Crop Tool to crop the image if needed.Go to Image Menu/Image Size. Uncheck “Resample Image”. |
This will lock together Width, Height and Resolution. |
Check the resolution to make sure it is at least 300 pixels/inch. |
If resolution is not high enough then CHECK the “Resample Image” box the change the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch. |
IMPORTANT NOTE: Increasing the resolution like this can cause the image to appear slightly “pixilated” (fuzzy) because the original image did not have enough resolution. However it is better to set the resolution in Photoshop rather than in the layout program. |
| ADJUST MIDTONES |
Press Command + L (or go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>LEVELS) and adjust the Midtone slider to the left to lighten the
midtones. Normally you will adjust it from 1.00 to somewhere between 1.20 and 1.60. |
| SHADOW ADJUSTMENT |
A common error in toning is to make midtone adjustments without restoring the shadow range (darkest setting). Check your detail
and shadows carefully. |
You can go to the “CURVES” menu under IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS. |
Touch the eyedropper tool to the area of the photo that needs darkening. Watch the “line” on the curve. A little dot will
indicate that this is where the tones are. You can then “grab” the line with your cursor and move it slightly and you will see
the tones change in your image. |
Alternative method for darkening is to use the “BURN” tool. |
| SHARPEN |
Go to the FILTERS>UNSHARP MASK menu to sharpen images. |
Typically you adjust the AMOUNT of sharpening. Keep RADIUS set to 1.5 and THRESHOLD set to 10. |
NOTE: NEVER sharpen more than once! |
You can slightly oversharpen the image. If there is a bit of “noise” around the edges, this will not show on the web press.
Usually you sharpen between 100-200%, depending on the image. |
NOTE: You have to use your judgement on each photo. They are all different. There is no set formula for doing this.
These are guidelines! |
CONVERT THE IMAGE TO GRAYSCALE OR CMYK
The last step is to go to IMAGE>MODE. Convert the image to GRAYSCALE if it is a B&W ad, or convert to CMYK if a color ad.
DO NOT USE RGB MODE in the final ad!!!!!!!
