backALL B&W AND COLOR PHOTOS: Size image correctly and crop before putting them into your ad layout. Set to 300 DPI (no higher or files get too large!)
BLACK & WHITE: Make sure it is set to “Grayscale” or “Black Ink” only. NOT RGB.
BLACK and WHITE IMAGES: Lighten your dark photos.
There are 3 KEYS to a good photo:
- Brighten Midtones
- Add Contrast
- Sharpen, Sharpen, Sharpen.*
ADJUST FOR DOT GAIN: The most common problem for photos in newsprint is DOT GAIN. Dot gain occurs when the ink goes on the paper and spreads, like a magic marker does on paper. It may look nice on the screen, but that will not show how it actually will print. There is a 33% dot gain in newsprint, which means you must lighten your image 33% to compensate.
COLOR IMAGES: MAKE YOUR PHOTOS “POP” COLOR IMAGE: Must be set to process CMYK. NO RGB.

* Note: If using Photoshop, use the UNSHARP MASK tool to sharpen. DO NOT sharpen more than once.
